A poor throwing arm and prejudice from one white boy keep a black junior high student from completely enjoying his position on the baseball team.

No Arm in Left Field Matt Christopher Sports Classics edition by Matt Christopher Byron Goto Children eBooks

I read this as a boy, and again recently when I bought it for a young man as a birthday gift. I enjoyed seeing an "adult" topic such as racism dealt with on a level a child can understand. As a black person whose family recently moved to a predominantly white neighborhood, Terry Delaney is forced to deal with two problems at once. He loves baseball and hits well, but his throwing arm is weak. As a left fielder, this is an issue to be resolved. He also faces racism from one of his teammates, a boy named Tony. All Terry wants is to adjust to a new neighborhood and to enjoy playing baseball again, but his throwing arm and Tony's constant cold shoulder could prevent him from doing so.

I enjoyed the resolutions to both problems, and it was a treat to both relive my youth by reading this and pass on the joy to the next generation.

No Arm in Left Field Matt Christopher Sports Classics edition by Matt Christopher Byron Goto Children eBooks Reviews

The book I read was NO ARM IN LEFT FIELD. It was a book about a kid who could not throw. One of his friends dad tought him how to throw better. (...) I hope I havn't giving out to much information about the book. I think you should read it because i really liked it and if you like sports books you would like it too.
The book No Arm in Left field is about a black kid who is new in town named Terry Delaney and plays baseball. The kid can't throw the ball. This kid also swings at high and outside pitches. There is also a kid who doesn't like the new kid. His name is Tony Casterline, he plays shortstop. During the games Tony doesn't go out for the cutoff so he makes Terry look bad, because he can't throw the ball. Terry and Tony end up being like best friends by the end of the book. So the two kids end up working together.
This book really showed the predijice that could happen to anyone. Terry was a black kid who was being excluded from his baseball team and peers. One friend Mick showed understanding and excepted him for who he was. In the end everyone came around but it took awhile. This was one of my favorite books and I hope you read it as well. So when your at the library pick this up.
I read these books when I was in fifth and sixth grade. They are all kind of formulaic and predictable to anyone 13 years of age and older but they are great for younger children. I recommend these books for child that you want to start reading more. They are easy reads and teach great lessons like team work, accepting differences in people and sportsmanship. They can really boost a child's confidence.
