The Henry Johnson Motel and owner Henry Johnson are both deteriorating through the years. When Cap Tanner shows up in Chestnut, NC, with a grand scheme to buy the property and turn it into a glitzy casino, several story lines take shape. Luck and connections put Tanner on a path to open his Pair-A-Dice Hotel and Casino. But there are numerous obstacles to confront. The cast of offbeat and flawed characters are memorable, but the true hero is the motel itself, which keeps on giving, secret after secret bones, junked cars, moonshine, gold, cash.... The story, so unbelievable that it becomes quite believable, offers humor, love, and an unexpected ending. Along the way, readers might discover a craving for ice cream.

This book is a modern day parable about life...the gambles and luck. Clary develops a very clever and quirky story line that quickly turns the book into a page turner.I recommend the book to anyone who wants a little mystery, a few laughs, and some things to ponder when you have finished the book about the paradoxes of life.
In the midst of the pleasure in simply enjoying the book there is a long list of subjects from which wisdom can be gleaned. They include:
Spirituality
History
Geography/travel
Geology
Science
Business planning
Nature and environmental preservation
Music appreciation
Sports
Romance
Guns and violence
Illegal drugs
Booze/moonshine and craft beer
Fine dining
Psychology/quirky characters who aren't "all there" or "all that" (saints and sinners simultaneously) but also very possibly comparable to real-life people.
If the book had illustrations (to be consistent with Clary's description of the characters) they would probably be done by an artist who had previous experience working for Mad magazine.
I highly recommend the book and hope that Clary is working on a sequel. He is certainly a potential and future best-selling author. I look forward to reading his next book.

The Henry Johnson Motel Bob Clary 9781478781295 Books Reviews
Hilarious novel about a small southern town. Funny, yet believable characters are woven around several story lines. Good southern humor. Kinda like Mayberry on steroids! Kudos to this new writer. Anxiously awaiting the sequel.
A very witty, detailed book with some amiably funny cast of characters. I'm from North Carolina and I was sucked in from the get go! An enjoyable read!
The improbable actually becomes plausible in this novel. You can have the voice of Seth Meyer's saying, "Really?! Really?!" But, turn the page, and yes, it keeps getting better. Besides having a Southern flair, the characters are loveable, but the motel is the star. You'll never drive down the interstate again and look at an old motel the same. I promise.
Mark Twain meets Pat Conroy with a little Monty Python thrown in for good measure. The interesting characters are actually caricatures of people you know and they will become your friends as you turn the pages. The impossible becomes possible, the improbable, probable, and you will finish the book not wanting it to end!
You will enjoy reading this sweet story based in North Carolina of a guy chasing a dream and along the way finds love with a beautiful, independent woman (inside and out)! When you first start the book you think it will go in one direction and ends in something so much more.
Really entertaining story based in the foothills outside of Charlotte, NC. You will meet some interesting characters, have a few belly laughs and be anxious to see how the story will play out. This first time author successfully caught my attention with his combination of quirky and genuine characters. The book reinforces trusting ones instincts and not giving up. Just an all around enjoyable read!
Bob Clary's first book is a winner. He has woven his North Carolina roots into an amusing, quirky story that is a light, fun read.
This fiction followed 'Cap' chasing a dream to turn a run down motel in small town Chestnut, NC into a casino. The author has woven sports, politics, American Indian struggles and visits to numerous NC locations into a heart-warming story. Along the way we meet memorable characters with unique names (e.g. Bacon the limo driver) and falls in love.
This story goes to show you never know what you will find when you start down a road chasing your dreams.
