What's New in the Florida Keys

I haven't written about the Keys in a while so I thought I'd let everyone know what is new here. For a long time many locals, as well as tourists, have enjoyed fishing on the old Seven Mile Bridge. Fishing from a structure such as a beach or a dock doesn't require a fishing license and on any given day you could see large numbers of people on Seven Mile Bridge relaxing with a rod and reel.

Well, those days are over. It has been decided that the bridge isn't safe anymore. No more fishing from the bridge will be allowed. Of course, there are still many other places to fish from, but this is a disappointment to the many people who spend long hours each day on that bridge.

For you seafood lovers, the lobster mini-season is coming soon. It is scheduled for July 30 and 31. Here in Monroe county, the bag limit will be six per person per day. If you plan to participate, be sure you know all the rules and regulations. If you are caught with undersized lobster there are very stiff penalties. For more information you can visit the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
